If you are planning to race in any of the CLUB100 races this
year and you’ve never been in a 2-stroke kart before, then we
strongly recommend that you do a Test Day first.
There is no point in turning up at a race meeting, thinking
you’re going to have a great day because you kick arse at indoor
or Pro-karts, only to have a crap day at CLUB100 because
you can’t keep the kart on the grey bit. It will leave you demoralized
and frustrated. Entering a Test Day is the best way to learn
how to handle the CLUB100 karts
and also learn the tracks in a pressure free environment
Although the CLUB100 karts are not significantly quicker than
Pro-karts, being a 2-stroke they deliver their power very differently.
Added to the fact that they are direct drive, the throttle response
is much sharper than from a 4-stoke with clutches. This can easily
catch out novice drivers as they try to get the power down smoothly
out of corners. Furthermore, steering the kart with the throttle
is rarely a technique used in a Pro-kart so for many novice drivers
this is also something new that has to be learnt.
CLUB100 karts
also run powerful Type ‘A’ race specification Freeline brake
systems. These are much sharper in operation than
a corporate based unit. Given that CLUB100 karts
are much lighter than Pro-karts, this can also catch out the
novice driver.
So with plenty of new techniques to master, it’s easy to see
that your first race day is not the place to try these out for
the first time. For your own enjoyment and safety, and the safety
of others, it’s much better to do a Test Day first.
On a Test Day, drivers arrive at registration, sign on and are
allocated karts for the day. Safety equipment (suit, helmet,
gloves) are available to hire at £10 plus deposit. A track
walk with the CLUB100 instructors is then highly recommended
so that drivers can be explained the lines, braking points and
surface changes of the circuit. For safety, marshal points also
need to be committed to memory. This is then followed by the
drivers’ briefing, during which the rules and regulations of
the event are explained. After that, there is a briefing on the
karts and refuelling techniques for the novice drivers in the
group.
The karts are warmed up by the CLUB100 technicians and carburettor
jets are set for the day, then it’s time for the fun to begin.
Groups are split three drivers per kart and there is three hours
of track time available. Groups should make sure that their pitstops
for fuel and driver changes are actioned as efficiently as possible
so that track time is not wasted.
The length of driver stints are at the discretion of the group
but are limited to the size of the fuel tank which holds enough
fuel for no more than about 25 minutes in dry conditions. However,
we recommend that novice drivers do no more than about 15 minutes
at a time. Group members take it in turns in the kart until the
end of the session.
TranX Pro computer timing is operated throughout the day, so
drivers can get print outs of their lap times and instructors
are on hand throughout to offer advice on any aspect of driving
and kart racing in general.
